Call for Papers: International Doctoral Conference: In Other Words. The Practice of Rewriting in Germanic and Slavic contexts (24th – 25th June 2026)
When seen through the lens of Gérard Genette’s concept of hypertextuality, rewriting may be understood as a process of linguistic, stylistic, content, and ideological reworking of a text (Alwis, Hinterberger, and Schiffer 2021). It may be also analysed from several other perspectives, ranging from André Lefevre’s (1992) definition of translation as textual reworking to feminist and post-colonial approaches (Spivak 1988; Ashcroft, Griffiths, and Tiffin 1989). The aim of this conference is to explore the theme of rewriting within the Germanic and Slavic fields of study, from a literary, philological and philosophical perspective.
The practice of rewriting has been playing a fundamental role since premodern times up
to nowadays in shaping our perception of reality. Consequently, this conference aims at investigating its impact in the Germanic and Slavic fields of study, regarding the following topics:
● Germanic, Scandinavian, and Slavic literatures from their origins to modern times (rewriting from a stylistic, content, ideological point of view);
● translation studies and reception studies;
● post-colonial and gender studies;
● rewritings of founding myths in Germanic, Scandinavian and Slavic cultures;
● rewriting and manuscript culture;
● Cinema, visual arts, and music from Germanic, Scandinavian, and Slavic countries.
