Research: Ghosts and Specters in the Literatures of Central Europe

Kamila Schewczuková graduated from the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague with a Bachelor’s degree in Czech language and literature and Religious Studies with her Bachelor’s thesis “Gendered Narration in the Fiction of Milada Součková“. She later obrained Master’s Degree in Comparative Literature at the same faculty with her master’s thesis titled “Writing into hands. Folklore in Contemporary Czech and Slovak Literature“. Since 2024, Kamila Schewczuková has been enrolled in the joint double degree in the doctoral programme in German and Slavonic Studies at Sapienza University (Rome, Italy) and Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic) with the research project “Ghosts and Specters in the Literatures of Central Europe“. Her research project focuses on analyzing the motifs of ghosts and specters in selected fiction narratives from Polish, Czech, Slovak, Roma and Ukrainian literature from 1989 until today.The aim of the project is to interpret the functions of ghostly figures within narratives in the context of trauma and memory studies and to differentiate various structurations of memory among some of the Central European cultures.
