Research: Gothic and post-postmodernism

Valentýna Žišková graduated from the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague with a Bachelor’s degree in Czech language and Literature and Master’s degree in Comparative Literature with diploma thesis „Possibilities of Synthesis of Marxist-Formalist Polemics in Texts of Selected Bakhtin’s Circle’s Members: Mikhail M. Bakhtin, Pavel N. Medvedev, Valentin N. Voloshinov“ Since 2024, Valentýna Žišková has been enrolled in the joint double degree in the doctoral programme in German and Slavonic Studies at Sapienza University (Rome, Italy) and Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic) with the research project „Gothic and post-postmodernism“. In her research project, she would like to map notion of „Gothic“ and its various forms in contemporary literary texts. She focuses on the term „Gothic“ in the Anglophone environment, where the concept has a long and important tradition, and plans to compare it with the literatures of Eastern Europe. Above all, she is interested in how the conditions of our today – which have the working title of „post-postmodernism“ in her dissertation, are reflected in contemporary texts and how they correspond to or transform traditional Gothic motifs.
